The Grand Oasis Playa Resort Economically Stressed  Adults Only in Beautiful Cancun Mexico

We just got back today Thursday September 4 , 2008 from a 2nd trip to this Resort. We were there 3 months ago.....Wow this place has changed.  The wife and I went there for our 26th Wedding Anniversary and it was a total disaster. This place is feeling the Economic Crunch and has gone to shit.. ...Don't waste your money, you will be sorry, they have made many changes that you will not know about until you get there....Warning......

Thanks Director for upgrading our room to a Superior Suite with Poor and at times NO Air Conditioning. We only had to change rooms once to another room with poor Air Conditioning and at times No Air Condtioning compared to a couple who we spoke with that changed rooms 3 times...

Day #1 Our 26^th Wedding Anniversary Hell Week

The wife and I work long hours and we try and get away whenever possible. We go somewhere every 3 to 4 months to keep our sanity. 3 months ago we were at The Grand Oasis Playa Resort for Adults only in Cancun.  We liked it so much we thought we would go back again this August 31, 2008 for our 26th Wedding Anniversary.

All the way there on the plane the wife said as soon as we get there I am going straight to their Buffet. They have this great big Buffet with a wide variety of food which makes it ideal so you don't have to eat the same thing every day if you do choose the Buffet, and it is Air conditioned, Yea!

Our taxi pulled up to the Hotel and my wife looked at me and said yes get me my All Inclusive Wrist band and I will meet you in the Buffet. We walked into the Lobby and something had changed. We were not greeted with the Lobby Air Conditioning, wooo I thought, what the Hell happened here. I blew it off and proceeded to get checked in.  We were greeted with a drink and checked in, our rooms were ready to go. We heard some other people in The Lobby arguing with each other, why are their rooms ready but our are not , we have been here for an  hour and a half. We were going to get a standard room but I e-mailed the Hotel General Director Szilard and  he said since it was our Anniversary he would upgrade us to a Superior Suite with a little Bath tube on the Terrace and one night with a Romantic Dinner on the Beach, we were so excited.

I told the wife I would go upstairs and meet the Bell Boy with our luggage and I would then meet her in the Buffet. She gave me a loving little kiss on the cheek and said great idea,  I went to the room and noticed as soon as I walked in the room was rather warm. I walked over to the thermostat cranked it down as far as it could go and walked over to the Terrace shades and opened the Curtains to a Beautiful View of the Ocean, The view was breath taking, simply amazing. I was starting to sweat pretty bad so I went over to the Air Conditioning vent to feel the Air Temperature and thought to myself, This is not Going to work, the air was cool, but not cool enough to keep this room cold , I am going to have to call the front Desk.  Just then a knock at the Door, HHHmmmm I thought I was just thinking of calling the Front desk and Boom they are here, now that’s fast service. I thought I had better get down to the Buffet and meet the wife, Then a knock at the door, it was our luggage, the bell man smiled and was very nice, he brought in our luggage and was on his way. I closed the door and 5 seconds later another knock at the door. I looked through the peep hole and it was my wife, I opened the door. She walked in sat on the bed looked up at me with sadness in her eyes and said The Buffet has been closed down for renovating. Oh I’m sorry. We were here now for about 1 hour and  Hell Week had Officially began.  Why is this room so damn hot she asked, I knew she was very upset because all I heard for the last week was that Damn Buffet.

Lets go to the front desk and see what’s going on. The front Desk said that they would have someone look at our Air Conditioner and told us where the new buffet is located.  On the way to the Buffet we stopped at The Lobby Bar. Fernando was tending bar, he was a very nice full of smiles. My choice of Alcohol is Jim Beam and Diet Coke and that is another reason why we choose this resort they carry my favorite Alcohol.  I got my Jim Beam and diet coke the wife got a Bahama Mama and we proceeded to the new Buffet.

You were greeted to The entrance of the Buffet by two Glass doors, the one on the left was broken and you had no idea until you pushed on it, a simple sign would have stopped people from using it and causing further destruction of the door.

When we walked into the Buffet area we stopped looked at each other and said this is it, it’s so small to handle this entire Resort.  The food choices were reduced from about 15 different choices of main courses to 3 . We tried what they had and we were not impressed, the wife remembered they also have a Sushi Bar on the lower deck. On the way to the Sushi Bar we stopped at the Snack area located next to the Health Drink Spa I got some Ribs and French Fries because I am not a Sushi person.  Ok we were back on Course they still had those Ribs I liked and the Sushi Bar my wife was fond of. 

We went to our room changed into our bathing suits and headed for the Swim up Bar ( air conditioned still not cold) . The wife got her Bahama Mama and I ordered my Jim Beam and coke…We enjoyed our drinks looked out into the ocean and started to count all the missing tiles from the pool. At that point we started noticing the lack of upkeep on the Resort.

We decided to go down to the beach area and lay in the shade on those comfortable 4 inch thick queen size hanging bed like lounges overlooking the Beautiful Ocean. To our disappointment they were gone, replaced by hard plastic lounge chairs and little Tekea huts.  After trying the Hard chairs we decided to go take a nap and then get ready for Dinner.

Getting ready for Dinner was a Task being so hot and sweating we did our best on the way to dinner we stopped at the front desk and enquired about how the status of our Air Conditioning getting fixed was going. They assured us it would be taken care of.  We went to the Buffet to see what they had to offer , We got a little of all the 3 main courses they had to choose from and so did the wife. Before finishing we got up and headed towards the Mediterranean Restaurant to try our luck there.  There were two other couples in the Restaurant and they didn’t look happy. This Restaurant  theme was their specialty in Cooking Pizza and Pizza bread in a wood burning oven.  By the time we were ready for desert we joined another couple on leaving because it was so hot and our eyes were burning from the smoke filled room.

After Day 1 of Hell Week we went to our hot rooms took a cold shower to cool off and retire for the night.

Day #2 Our 26^th Wedding Anniversary Hell Week

Instead of boring you with an entire Novel that looks like where this article was going I will just touch base on the Highlights.

1)      Jim Beam no longer available at swim up bar, had to get shirt on and go all the way to the Lobby Bar for Jim Beam every time I wanted a drink

2)      Ribs no longer on the Menu at The Snack Bar

3)      Cold Eggs and No Bacon at the Buffet

4)      Room Air conditioner still not fixed

We made Dinner reservation at the Mexican Restaurant , there are no Mexican dishes on the Menu so why they call it a Mexican Restaurant we don’t know and we don’t care we found some good food. After dinner we were by the pool and met up with the General Director Szilard   and Manager in Training Pablo.  The Director stated as you can see Michael there have been some changes made since you were here 3 months ago. We asked him about the Grand Buffet closing and he said Economic Stress has forced us to make changes.  After talking for a while and venting to the Director and Pablo on how our 26^th Wedding Anniversary was not going to well and that most of his staff was rude and hardly no-one smiled, I stressed that you take care of your customers and they will take care of you, we could see that the Director had achieved his goal on getting us to his Resort with the Upgrades he offered and that was that, end of conversation. I also told him it it was a shame that the lobby bathroom is colder than our room and I will sleep in the Lobby Bathroom if I have to. We knew something was up when the General Manager and Manger Pablo in training were there at 8pm. So it wasn’t renovation on the Buffet it was Economic Stress.  Thanks for the upgrade to a HOT ROOM !  We got to our hot room took a cold shower called the Front Desk about the AC and went to bed.

Day #3 Our 26^th Wedding Anniversary Hell Week

Enough was enough with the Air conditioner, the next morning we went to the front desk and asked them abou the ac and they said that maintenance said everything was ok with the AC. We explained to them that we would like another room, they said it would be ready after lunch.  We went to the sister Resort for breakfest. The Grand Cancun Oasis . What a difference, hot eggs and there was BACON and a much larger choice.

Went to our room to pack move and unpack and the Maintenance crew was there tearing apart our A/C unit. That’s funny the front desk told us that Maintenance said there was nothing wrong with our  A/C and here they are tearing it apart… We went to the pool area and I went to the snack bar and the snack bar was gone. When asked about it the Bar tender said no-more snack bar closed for good… We were in our room getting ready for dinner. We were eating at the Mexican Restaurant Again, we knew the food was good. Guess what 6pm and the Air Conditioning quit working. So on the way to dinner we stopped at the Front Desk to tell them about the A/C and stopped at the Lobby Bar for a Jim beam and coke. Jim Beam not an option they were out, or was it the Economic crunch or poor Management?

Day #4 Our 26^th Wedding Anniversary Hell Week

Our last night here, at this point I couldn’t wait to leave. The AC kicked on later that night but never got real cold.  I couldn’t wait for this trip to end, but we did try and make the best of it.  We went to the Sister Resort to for Breakfast came back to our resort changed into our swimming suites and headed for the pool.  After lounging by the pool for a while I went up to the lobby bar to get the wife a Bahama Moma and me a Jim Beam and coke if they had any Jim Beam that is.  Guess what they closed down the Lobby Bar, yes Lobby Bar closed until further notice. Econimic Stress has hit The Grand Oasis Playa Resort in Cancun Mexico and the guests are paying for it. I have to ask myself, is really Economic Stress or Poor Management.  I spoke with a few other guests all had some type of comments about either the A/C , some changing rooms 3 times and some saying this is not what I paid for.  Well guess what we agree and will never go back. Interview with some of the guests on video coming soon.  That night we decided to go to the Mexican Night dinner and show, how bad could that be. It wasn’t bad I mean a Taco is a Taco. Guess who was helping serve the meal, yes The General Director and Manager in Training Pablo. They asked me how things were going and I said well ok except for a few things like my A/C not being cold enough. Pablo said there is nothing we can do about the A/C.  Oh come Pablo, that is why you are in training.  Don’t tell me you can’t do anything about the a/c, you can’t because you have no idea how to fix this problem.  Why is A/C colder in some rooms, why do your visitors want to go to the Lobby Bathroom to sleep.  Corporate Management of the Oasis Establishment better take a close look, is it Economic Stress hitting their Resorts or is it decisions made by Management that is driving people away from their Resort.  I will not come back  to this Resort or any other Oasis Resort.. Take Care of the Customer and the Customer will take Care of you! They just don’t get it at this Resort. So many workers not smiling and greeting you, are the workers so anti social because of the stress management has put on them, things closing, is someone going to loose a job, scared for their jobs.  Economic Stress or Poor Management?. If I had known there would have been so many changes I would not have came back to this Resort.
